Join our local team and become a Parish Councillor
Do you want to make a positive difference in our community? The role of a Councillor is wide ranging, from commenting on local planning applications to organising village events and initiatives.
What is involved?
Yealmpton Parish Council is made up of 10 voluntary Councillors, they meet once a month (except for in August) to discuss and act on issues that are important to the Parish. Being a Councillor is a rewarding experience and you will be able to support and enhance your community. The monthly meetings usually last two hours depending upon the items on the agenda. In addition to the monthly meetings, councillors may be required to attend other meetings relating to area of responsibility or interest.
No special qualification is required to be a councillor. It is important that all parts of the community are represented.
Eligibility
You have to be:
- a British subject, or a citizen of the Commonwealth or the European Union
- over 18 years of age
- and additionally you have to be one of the following
- a local government elector for the parish council area
- have during the whole of the 12 months occupied as owner or tenant any land or other premises in the parish council area or within 3 miles of it for the whole period
- have during that same period had your principal or only place of work in the council area or within 3 miles of it for the whole period.
You cannot stand for election if you;
- are subject of a bankruptcy restriction order or interim order.
- have, within five years before the day of the election, been convicted in the United Kingdom of any offence and have had a sentence of imprisonment (whether suspended or not) for a period of over three months without the option of a fine.
You don’t have to be connected to a political party. If you do become a parish councillor you will have to sign up to the Code of Conduct.
Training for new councillors is also available to help you understand the responsibilities of the role.

Parish Council meetings are held on the second Monday of the month at 7.30pm in the Community Centre.
